1) Why do I need to pass a forklift training test?
As stated above, in the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates and controls, operation of all industrial machinery, including material handling equipment like forklifts. Any fork truck operator found to not be properly certified and trained will face heavy fines. More importantly, forklifts are dangerous machines that kill people each year in various kinds of accidents that can be prevented with proper forklift training.
2) What will I be taught in a forklift training test class?
Generally, you will be taught the various OSHA rules and regulations regarding fork trucks, the various types of fork truck and forklift accessories. You should also be taught how to inspect your material handling equipment before use and possible preventative maintenance. If you also take a hands-on training class you will be put through a driving test and simple maneuverability test including raising and lowering the forks.
3) Once I pass my class what is next?
Once you pass your training test you will become a certified lift truck operator and be given your certification card. You will want to take this card to your job to prove you are certified, and have it with you whenever you are operating a forklift as proof or your forklift certification. Your certification is good for at least two years after which you will need to take continuing education courses or get new Forklift Certification.
4) Do I need to get certified before operating a forklift?
Yes. If you are not already certified getting certification can show a potential employer that you are serious about a forklift career. Some employers have their own trainers, but most employers will require you to be certified before starting work and certainly before operating any machinery.
